1a)

A plant has roots which extend into the soil. Attached to these roots are small hairs, called root hairs which increase the surface area of the root and allow the root to take up water more easily. Water moves into the roots by osmosis which requires no energy since the water concentration is greater outside the plant then inside the plant’s roots.”Once inside the root hair, the water needs to be transferred to the xylem, the vascular tissue involved in water transport through the plant. In roots, the vascular tissue is found in a central column, separated from the cortex parenchyma cells by a single layer of cells called the endodermis

There is a water concentration gradient across the root which means that water which has entered the root hair cell continues to move across the cortex to the endoderm

is by osmosis. The route taken by much of the water is through the cellulose cell walls, the rest of the water either passes through the cytoplasm of the cells or via the cell vacuoled once it reaches the endoderm cells, the water is forced to move through the cytoplasm.

This is because the radial and transverse cell walls of the young endoderm is are impregnated with an impervious material. This is known as the Casperian strip, its presence means the route throughthe cell walls is blocked.

The gradient of water concentration that exists across the cortex creates a pushing force called “root pressure”, i.e. a pressure that “pushes” the water across. Root pressure can be demonstrated by cutting a stem atsoil level, after a time, droplets of water can be seen exuding from the cut surface. In some plants the process occurs naturally as”gustation”, when droplets of water are forced through special pores (hydathodes) on the leaf edges.

It is likely that the process of root pressure requires energy, as metabolic poisons halt the process.”

2a)
Enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.

2aii)
i)all enzymes are proteins.
ii)Enzymes possess great catalytic power.
iii)Enzymes are highy specific.
iv)Enzymes show varying degree of specificities.
v)Absolute specificity where the enzymes
react specifically with only one substrate.

OR

2aii)

1.Enzyme is a protein. The main material of an enzyme is protein

2. It is easily influenced, by environmental change. Environmental factors include temperature, pH, and inhibitor.

3. It acts as catalyst The enzyme functions in accelerating chemical reaction, but the enzyme itself does not change after the reaction ends.

4. It functions specifically. The enzyme only catalyzes one kind of substrate and cannot function for many substrates. The term is called one enzyme one substrate.

5. It functions in reverse. It means the enzyme does not determine the direction of reaction, but it only functions in accelerating reaction rate until it reaches equilibrium. The enzyme also functions in substance synthesis and substance breaking down reaction.

6. It is required, in small amount . A small amount of enzyme is able to catalyze a chemical reaction.

 2b)

Pancreatic fluid or juice contains digestive enzymes that pass to the small intestine where they help to further break down the carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids (fats) in the chyme. Pancreatic juice is a liquid secreted by the pancreas, which contains a variety of enzymes including trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen, elastase, carboxypeptidase, pancreatic lipase, nucleases, and amylase.Pancreatic juice is alkaline in nature due to the high concentration of bicarbonate ions. This is useful in neutralizing the acidic gastric acid, allowing for effective enzymic action.

2c)
most importantly, sun provides vitamin D which helps the body absorb the minerals calcium and phosphorus from the food that the boy eat, which is important for bone health. While milk is the main source of dietary calcium. Calcium is a major bone mineral, mandatory for bone health.

2d)
i)Photosynthesis conducted by plants is also an important part of the carbon cycle.
ii)It releases oxygen needed for breathing
iii)It serves as source of food manufacturing for human rights
iv)It provides sources for fuel through plants
v)it help to balance the ecosystem
